From a young age I was inspired by design in countless ways. From my early years, building lego masterpieces, indulging in water paints and crayons, and building a full wardrobe for my Barbie dolls, there was never a shortage of creative ideas. And along came the tween years, where I often sported my own clothing designs and reconstructions.
One summer, after I had just completed eleventh grade in High School and living in a small country town, I became simply bored with the lack of opportunities presented. Out of this boredom, I dug into my mom's "yarn supplies", found a ball of blue yarn that caught my eye and decided that I wanted to make a tube top out of it. With no experience whatsoever in crocheting, I went to my mom for assistance. My mother, well experienced in crochet, was more than willing to help me out. I never did finish that tube top, but I did make numerous hand bags with embroidered stitching and granny squares all summer long. I was having fun!
Time went on, I graduated high school and moved to the city. Crochet was always a part of my life. After work, it was ritual that I come home and crochet. Why buy decorative items for my apartment, when I could crochet my own curtains, sofa throws, and pillow covers? I even made my own dish cloths. | |
More time went on, I moved across the country and continued my journey into design. Throughout this time, I had always been working somewhere unrelated to my passion and spending my free time designing. One year, at Xmas time, I even crocheted tree ornaments for all of my co-workers. No matter what I was doing, where I was living, whom I knew, I always went back to crochet. As a side project, I began making "band" shirts all from crochet! I would find a good photo of a rock band or image, grid it out onto graph paper, and incorporate the image into a cute top!
As well as crocheting, I am also well educated in the art of Fashion Design, including pattern drafting, sewing techniques, textiles, and garment printing.
I have a deep love for couture fashion and its history as well as a love for the vintage designs from the 1950's, 60's and 70's. The early patterns were so intricate and precise and as crochet patterns moved into the hippy generation, they became wild, eccentric, and colorful. I look back on these patterns, and think "I could do this even better!" |
